CAKE is an alternative indie-styled rock band from Sacramento, California. The band’s name is specifically stylized in all caps “CAKE”. The band was originally formed when lead singer John McCrea relocated to Los Angeles to start a band. Unfortunately McCrea’s band fell apart shortly after he arrived in L.A., so he moved back to Sacramento. Once back home in 1991, he met trumpeter Vince DiFiore, and original band members including guitar player Greg Brown, bassist Shon Meckfessel and drummer Frank French.
Once CAKE was formed, the group quickly gained a fan base for McCrea’s quirky, deadpan delivery of his lyrics and songs. The band’s first album Motorcade Of Generosity was self-produced by John McCrea and the rest of the band, releasing their first single “Rock ‘n’ Roll Lifestyle”. The single gained respectable attention for the album, garnering it labels of Best Indie Release from publications at the time. It also gained the band a re-release of Motorcade Of Generosity on Capricorn Records.
CAKE’s second album release Fashion Nugget was released in 1996, and had the band’s most successful single to date “Going The Distance”. The band also released other single’s and covers of popularity, including “Short Skirt, Long Jacket”, “Love You Madly”, “Never There” and the cover of the popular Gloria Gaynor song “I Will Survive”.
